JCSU Board Chair featured for her leadership, philanthropy and family history of breaking barriers

Charlotte, N.C./Nov. 28, 2022听鈥撎鼳ugust is Black Philanthropy Month, a time to recognize the importance of Black philanthropists in advancing Black organizations, institutions and causes. Shirley J. Hughes, the first woman to serve as chair of the 星空无限传媒 Board of Trustees, is a noted philanthropist in her hometown of Minneapolis and endows a scholarship at JCSU. She was inducted in JCSU鈥檚 Golden Bull Giving Society, which honors donors who have given from $100,000 to $499,000 to the University. 听

Chair Hughes and members of her family are known as trailblazers, groundbreakers and ceiling breakers for being 鈥渢he first Black person鈥 to achieve several noteworthy educational, professional and social accomplishments in Minneapolis and the Midwest. She was recently featured in the Spring 2020 edition of Minneapolis鈥 Lake Society Magazine in recognition of her philanthropic contributions and her family history. For the second consecutive year, Duke Energy Corporation hosted a comprehensive Career Development & Professionalism Workshop听aimed at empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in today鈥檚 competitive job market.听 The event took place on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the James B. Duke Library where Duke Energy provided breakfast, lunch, and numerous giveaways. The POWER UP Bootcamp attracted a diverse group of more than 33 undergraduate students from various majors who were eager to enhance their career readiness and skills as well as develop other essential professional competencies.
