Springfield presents research in preparation for her journey to earn her doctorate

HOUSTON, Texas, December 6, 2019 - This semester, McNair Scholar Aria Springfield 鈥19 presented her research at two different conferences, most recently at Rice University鈥檚 National Student Leadership Conference in Houston, Texas. Her research deals with the Lost Cause Narrative and it鈥檚 perpetuation through historical tourism in Charleston, South Carolina.

Springfield was granted the opportunity to present research through the Mellon Mays Fellow Undergraduate Program, an academic fellowship for minority students with interest in humanities, to conduct research in preparation for a doctoral degree.听听

鈥淐onferences such as this one allow me to become more comfortable in presenting research,鈥 Springfield said.听

Since becoming a McNair Scholar, Springfield has learned new skillsets that she feels will help her when in her graduate studies.

鈥淭here is a need for more black faces in this field, and I am grateful for the Mellon Mays Fellow Undergraduate Program in preparing me for that journey,鈥 she said. 鈥淥btaining my doctoral degree would be a win as a Black woman.鈥澨

Springfield is passionate about sharing her research at future conferences, all while networking with other fellows and university faculty and staff across the country.

Although she has many academic accomplishments under her belt, Springfield has no plans on stopping her grind. She is determined to be a professor and do her part to diversity the voices that tell our nation鈥檚 history.

For the second consecutive year, Duke Energy Corporation hosted a comprehensive Career Development & Professionalism Workshop听aimed at empowering students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in today鈥檚 competitive job market.听 The event took place on Saturday, Nov. 2, in the James B. Duke Library where Duke Energy provided breakfast, lunch, and numerous giveaways. The POWER UP Bootcamp attracted a diverse group of more than 33 undergraduate students from various majors who were eager to enhance their career readiness and skills as well as develop other essential professional competencies.
