Yamani Smith-Murrell ’11 was a smart kid, but admits he didn’t always apply himself. But a chance meeting with a �ǿ����޴�ý admissions counselor on a “You Can” college tour was the catalyst that would change his life forever.

A six-person debate team from �ǿ����޴�ý recently traveled to Raleigh for the annual North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Ethics Bowl.

The U.S. Department of Commerce National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) recently awarded �ǿ����޴�ý $5.7 million for campus technology upgrades and broadband 5G deployment. This is the largest government grant the University has received.��

�ǿ����޴�ý organizations and academic programs will be debuting a number of events in celebration of Black History Month throughout February.

But I Am Black History Week, put on by the Office of Student Leadership and Engagement, the JCSU Royal Court and the Golden Bulls Activity Committee (GBAC) will host daily events from Feb. 13 to 17.

Faculty from 15 institutions of higher learning were selected as candidates for the Faculty Innovation Fellowship at Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design (d.school), one of whom is �ǿ����޴�ý’s own Dr. John Bannister.

�ǿ����޴�ý added Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, N.Y. to its JCSU Connect Program during an articulation agreement signing.

During a recent Mecklenburg County Commissioner meeting, �ǿ����޴�ý’s Lactation and Doula Program became one of 75 local projects funded with money allocated from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA).

While some faculty and students spent their winter break home with family celebrating the holidays, Criminology major Alexis Lawson ’23 flew to Hawaii with Dr. Anita Bledsoe-Gardner, professor of Criminology, to present collaborative research at the International Academic Forum (IAFOR[BSD1]) Conference.

“This was more than an academic trip,” said Lawson, who visited Hawaii last year for a similar presentation. “I wanted experience giving another presentation because I could add it to my resume. Plus, it was Hawaii, so why not go again?”

�ǿ����޴�ý hosted a panel discussion on the history and impact of George Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess" in Biddle Hall's Gambrell Auditorium.

Panelists included cast members of Opera Carolina's "Porgy and Bess" production, Kenneth Overton and Dr. Sequina Dubose;��Dr. Barbara Buck, longtime singer and music educator; and JCSU's own Dr. Shawn-Allyce White,��associate professor of Music and director of Choral Activities.

JCSU hosted the MLK Peace Breakfast on Tuesday in Grimes Lounge after a hiatus due to the pandemic. ��


Reinstituted by Kenyatta V. Sanders-Foreman, instructional technology librarian, and the Division of Student Affairs, the Peace Breakfast paid homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The program presented words of wisdom from speakers who informed attendees how they can continue to live the dream King longed to become a reality.
